Kingsgate Centre struggles with rising antisocial behaviour and shoplifting issues
Dunfermline: The Kingsgate Centre is dealing with some serious issues lately. The manager, Neil Mackie, mentioned that while shoplifting is a concern, the bigger problem is the antisocial behaviour from younger visitors.
He pointed out that the nearby bus station has its own troubles, and unfortunately, the centre isn’t immune to it either. Neil said, “The biggest problem we have at the moment is with antisocial behaviour – it isn’t theft but malicious damage.” It seems this is a widespread issue across Scotland.
Neil also noted that this isn’t just a local problem. He believes it’s partly political, with groups of people coming in without paying for bus fares. This situation affects the centre and leads to higher repair costs, creating a frustrating cycle.
Shoplifting is on the rise too, and it’s hitting businesses at the Kingsgate Centre hard. As a director of retailers against crime in Scotland, Neil sees the retail theft problem growing significantly. It’s even been brought up in the Scottish Parliament and Westminster, highlighting how serious it is.
He mentioned that while they’re managing the situation as best as they can, the increase in theft is largely due to the cost of living crisis. It’s not just petty theft anymore; many people are stealing just to get by, which is alarming.
Neil summed it up well, saying it’s about trying to see the bigger picture amidst all the chaos. It’s a tough time for everyone involved.
