Fire crews in Dunfermline worked tirelessly to rescue a dog trapped in a sewer, bringing relief to its worried owners.
After searching for about an hour, Margaret’s husband, Garry, heard the faint sound of Maizi’s collar bells. She’s deaf, so that was their only clue. They quickly called emergency services for help.
By 5 PM, fire crews and specialists arrived to start a big rescue operation. Maizi was stuck on a ledge inside the sewer, and everyone was determined to get her out safely.
Margaret was really impressed with how professional and caring the emergency teams were. She said, “They were first class.” But it was a rollercoaster of emotions as they tried different methods to rescue Maizi.
They had teams with diggers, and even the Mines Rescue team tried to go down the sewer. It was a tough situation, and at one point, they were on plan H!
Finally, they used an excavator to dig out the bottom and pumped out the water. After all that effort, Maizi was finally freed and brought back to her owners.
They rushed her to an emergency vet in Kirkcaldy, and now she’s back at Alba Vets in Dunfermline. Margaret said Maizi is doing better than expected for her age and condition.
“She’s eating fine and they’re going to give her a bath. She smelled like a sewer rat when she came out!” Margaret added.
It was a stressful time, and she felt there should have been a grate covering the sewer. The support from the community and social media was heartwarming.
“We’re so grateful to everyone who helped get Maizi out safely,” Margaret said. “It was such a relief to see her alive after being trapped for over eight hours.”
Maizi has always been full of life, and her family is overjoyed to have her back. The kindness and support they received during this tough time meant the world to them.
Liam Parrish from MRS Training and Rescue was also on the scene. He mentioned that they tried their best to assist the fire service, but the area was too tight for their smaller team members to get in.
Just as they were leaving after 1 AM, they heard the good news that Maizi had been rescued. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they received the call about the trapped dog around 5 PM, and they had multiple vehicles on site to help with the rescue.
