The East Lancashire Railway is set to undergo a £1.3m facelift for vital repairs
Bury: One of the prettiest spots on the East Lancashire Railway is getting a much-needed makeover. The Higher Woodhill Viaduct, located near Burrs Country Park, is about to receive over £1.3 million for essential repairs.
This beautiful viaduct has been around since the early 1900s, and the last time it was fixed up was way back in 1932. It’s great to see it getting some love! The funding comes from a mix of sources, including a big chunk from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, along with support from local councils and community members.
The work is set to kick off in the spring, which is exciting news for everyone who loves the railway. Regular checks show that the viaduct is safe for now, but it definitely needs some long-term care to keep those steam and heritage diesel trains rolling.
Cllr Charlotte Morris from Bury Council also praised the team for their hard work in securing the funds. She’s looking forward to seeing the maintenance work get underway and is excited about the future of the railway.
Mike Kelly, the Chairman of East Lancashire Railway, shared his thoughts too. He highlighted how important this funding is for maintaining the railway’s infrastructure and ensuring that visitors can continue to enjoy the beautiful Victorian structures along the route.
With this funding, the railway can keep running its popular events and services without a hitch, making sure future generations can enjoy the charm of the East Lancashire Railway.
