Flights from Edinburgh to Tenerife faced diversions after a technical issue at Reina Sofía airport caused significant delays for travelers.
The plane finally landed at Tenerife South around 5:45 PM but then had a technical issue on the runway, which left it stuck for a bit. Another easyJet flight heading to Edinburgh had to divert to Madrid overnight, which meant passengers faced a 24-hour delay due to crew timing issues.
An easyJet spokesperson mentioned that the temporary runway closure at Tenerife caused some disruption for all airlines. They’re doing their best to help customers get to their destinations, offering options to rebook or get refunds, plus hotel stays and meals if needed.
One passenger shared their experience with the Edinburgh Reporter. They noticed the plane was circling before the captain announced the diversion to Gran Canaria. They had to wait a couple of hours there to refuel before heading back to Tenerife.
The easyJet staff kept everyone updated, and thankfully, everyone stayed calm. The passenger couldn’t get a signal to let their friend know they were delayed or even check the Hibs score. They were worried they might have to stay overnight in Gran Canaria, but it all worked out in the end.
They ended up 90 minutes late leaving Edinburgh, but if they had been on time, they would have landed just before the private jet that caused the issue. Upon arrival, they faced another hour at passport control and a long taxi queue, but the staff were great, and there were plenty of taxis available.
In the end, they reached their apartment five hours later than planned, but at least they were safe and sound.
