A Mercedes driver from Essex is in court, accused of killing a pedestrian in a tragic incident on Christmas Day in London
London: So, there’s this guy, Anthony Gilheaney, who was driving a Mercedes-Benz E-Class and got into some serious trouble. He allegedly ran down four men on Shaftesbury Avenue while he was disqualified from driving. Not cool, right?
The whole thing went down around 1am on Christmas Day. Apparently, he even leaned out of the car towards a couple with a baby in a pushchair. That’s just reckless!
He was speeding like crazy, hitting over 60mph on the wrong side of the road in central London. Can you imagine? It’s a miracle no one else got hurt.
When the police finally caught up with him, they found a small knife on him in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. Just adds to the craziness of the situation.
Sadly, one of the guys he hit, Aidan Chapman, 25, passed away in the hospital on New Year’s Eve. That’s just heartbreaking.
Gilheaney was initially charged with attempted murder and other serious offenses, but now, with Aidan’s death, he’s facing murder charges.
He appeared at the Old Bailey via video link from Belmarsh Prison for a preliminary hearing. The judge set a timeline for the case, with a plea hearing coming up on March 28 and a trial scheduled for December 1.
Gilheaney, who’s from Harlow in Essex, only spoke to confirm who he was and was sent back into custody.
Aidan’s parents shared their grief, saying losing their son was “a parent’s worst nightmare.” They described him as a loving and funny person, and it’s clear he’ll be deeply missed.
