Six EV charging cables were stolen from the University of Worcester, raising concerns about a wider theft issue in the area
Worcester: So, it turns out that six EV charging cables were swiped from the University of Worcester’s Severn Campus. And guess what? This isn’t just a one-off thing; it’s happening all over Worcestershire.
The theft went down on Friday, January 3. Police have already made one arrest related to these thefts, which seem to be popping up in various spots around Worcestershire.
A spokesperson from West Mercia Police mentioned they’re looking into several cases of stolen EV cables in Worcester and Bromsgrove. A 27-year-old guy was nabbed on January 6, and he’s still in custody while they dig deeper.
One local, who wanted to stay anonymous, shared that someone went around cutting and taking the cables from the fast chargers. It’s not just the university; it’s happening in Bromsgrove too.
They added, “I drive an electric car, but I can’t charge it because most charging points in Bromsgrove and Droitwich are missing their cables.”
“Even the one at Asda in Bromsgrove had live wires exposed. My son had to hit the emergency switch and report it. Someone’s going to get hurt if this keeps up.”
A spokesperson for the University of Worcester confirmed the thefts and said they’re working closely with the police to sort things out. They assured everyone that there are still plenty of charging options available at the Severn Campus.
Interestingly, back in September 2023, the UK Government announced that by 2030, 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold in Great Britain must be zero-emission. They’re pushing for 100% by 2035.
Worcestershire County Council also chimed in, saying this shift will encourage more car owners to ditch petrol and diesel vehicles in favor of electric ones.
