Stuart Hogg, the former Scotland rugby captain, is set to be sentenced for domestic abuse against his estranged wife after pleading guilty
Selkirk: So, here’s the scoop. Stuart Hogg, the ex-captain of Scotland’s rugby team, is about to face sentencing for some pretty serious stuff. He admitted to abusing his estranged wife, Gillian, over five years. That’s a long time, right?
He pleaded guilty to domestic abuse charges at Selkirk Sheriff Court. The court heard he was pretty controlling, tracking her movements and sending her distressing messages. Not cool at all.
Back in June, he broke bail conditions by contacting her multiple times, even sending her 28 texts in one night. That’s just overwhelming. The sheriff gave him a five-year non-harassment order and slapped him with a fine, too.
Hogg was supposed to be sentenced last month, but the judge decided to wait until January 9 to figure out if he could get a community order since he’s living abroad now.
During their relationship, things got really bad. He would shout at her for not being “fun” after nights out with his mates. Imagine getting over 200 texts in just a few hours! That’s just too much.
They moved to Exeter in 2019 with their kids, but his behavior took a nosedive. Friends and family noticed changes in Gillian, which is always a red flag. In 2023, she finally decided to leave him and sought help.
Things escalated in September when he bombarded her with messages, leading to a panic attack. The police had to step in when he was found shouting and swearing. He was then ordered not to contact her at all.
Hogg retired from rugby last summer but was back in the game with Montpellier. It’s a shame to see someone with such talent get into this kind of trouble.
