Stuart Hogg, the former Scotland rugby captain, faces a community payback order after admitting to years of domestic abuse against his estranged wife.
Selkirk: So, former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg has found himself in some serious trouble. He’s been sentenced to a community payback order after admitting to abusing his estranged wife, Gillian, for five years. Can you believe it?
He showed up at Selkirk Sheriff Court and pleaded guilty to domestic abuse. The court heard he was pretty nasty, shouting, swearing, and even tracking her movements. It’s just heartbreaking to hear.
The sheriff gave him a year of supervision and a five-year non-harassment order. This means he can’t contact her at all. Hogg had already been banned from approaching her after breaching bail conditions. He sent her a whopping 28 texts in one night! That’s just too much.
It turns out Hogg’s behavior really changed after they moved to Exeter in 2019. He started going out a lot and partying, which led to him being verbally abusive. His wife’s family even noticed she was different. It’s sad to see how things spiraled out of control.
In 2022, she went out one night and got bombarded with texts from him, which made her friends worry. By 2023, she decided enough was enough and sought help from a domestic abuse service. That’s when she finally left him.
Things got so bad that in September 2023, he sent her over 200 texts in just a few hours, which caused her to panic. The police had to step in when he was shouting and swearing, leading to his arrest.
Hogg retired from rugby last summer but then signed with Montpellier. It’s a real shame to see someone with such talent get caught up in this mess. He was even honored with an MBE last year. It’s just a tough situation all around.
