The Iron Bridge in Exeter will close for five months starting January 13 for essential repairs and upgrades to improve safety and access.
Exeter: So, here’s the scoop. The Iron Bridge in Exeter is closing tomorrow for some much-needed repairs. It’s going to be shut for about five months, which is quite a while, right?
They’re doing a bunch of work, like fixing the structure, improving drainage, and even resurfacing the deck. Plus, they’ll be upgrading the signs and lighting. Sounds like a big project!
The bridge, which has been around for 190 years, will be closed 24/7. The closure stretches from Dinham Road to Paul Street, so keep that in mind if you’re in the area.
While they’re at it, they’ll also widen the south footway to make it easier for pedestrians. And there’s good news for cyclists too! They’re adding a segregated cycle lane heading into the city center.
Now, if you usually park on Lower North Street, you’ll need to find another spot. Those public permit spaces will be closed during the work.
But don’t worry! Access to the City Gate Hotel and local businesses will still be available. Just keep an eye out for signs, as things might change a bit during the refurbishment.
Devon Alert, the official page for Devon County Council Highways, shared the news on X, saying the bridge will be closed from January 13 until June 2025. They’ve got more info if you need it.
As for getting around, there will be a full traffic diversion in place. You’ll need to take a different route via South Street and a few other roads. Pedestrians can use Lower North Street, and there’s step-free access via Queen Street.
Cyclists will have their own diversion too, so everyone can still get where they need to go. Just be sure to follow the signs!
