A gas leak in Exeter led to a cordon and train station closure, but services have now resumed following emergency response efforts
Fire crews got the call around 3:53 PM about the leak coming from a first-floor flat. They quickly suited up with breathing gear to find the source while keeping everyone safe.
After some time, they managed to shrink the cordon to 50 meters and finally lifted it around 7:55 PM. The firefighters worked hard to clear out any leftover gas before wrapping things up. There was also a power cut at Exeter Central Station, which added to the mess.
The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service reported that they were on the scene to handle the situation. They found that a damaged gas pipe was leaking into the flat, which is why they had to act fast.
Great Western Railway (GWR) confirmed that all lines at Exeter Central were shut down due to the gas leak. They quickly arranged alternative transport for passengers.
GWR updated everyone, saying the disruption was expected to last until around 6:45 PM. They were working on getting replacement road transport between Exeter St David’s and Exmouth, but the road closures made it tricky.
By early this morning, National Rail announced that everything was back to normal. They shared on X that both the gas leak and the power cut had been resolved, and trains were running on schedule again.
Meanwhile, Devon Alert warned folks about traffic and pedestrian closures in parts of the city center due to the incident. They advised everyone to expect delays and find alternative routes if they could.
