Glasgow: Lynn Macdonald, an NHS nurse, is showing off the new drug consumption room in the city. It’s a place where people can use drugs without the fear of getting arrested.

She emphasizes that this service is all about treating people with dignity and respect. The center, called The Thistle, is bright and inviting. It offers clean equipment and a cozy space away from the streets.

There’s even a lounge area for folks to chill out after using, plus shower and laundry facilities. It’s a first for the UK, but similar services exist in over 100 places worldwide.

The goal? To help reduce fatal overdoses and lower HIV transmission rates. The Thistle is located in the east end of Glasgow, not too far from a supermarket and some industrial spots, about a mile from the city center.

While there, I met “Robin,” a guy who uses heroin. He’s not too sure how many people will actually use the new room. He pointed out that if his dealer is closer, he’s likely to go there instead.

Staff at the center know their reach might be limited, but they see this as a starting point. Dr. Saket Priyadarshi, who works with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, made it clear that this service alone won’t solve the national drug crisis.

He hopes it will help reduce harm and deaths among the most vulnerable users. The Scottish government has invested £2 million a year to make this happen, despite previous resistance from Westminster.

They’re also looking to connect users with broader healthcare, housing, and benefits support. The center will be open every day from 9 am to 9 pm, and many are eager to see how it all unfolds.
