The closure of Smyths Toys in Salisbury leaves families saddened and searching for alternatives for their children’s toy needs
Salisbury: It’s a tough time for families as Smyths Toys is shutting down. The news hit hard, especially for parents and kids who loved visiting the store.
The local paper mentioned that both Smyths and Homesense will be leaving the retail park in early 2025. Homesense is expected to close soon, and Lidl is looking to take over those spaces.
Jeni Smith, a local firefighter, shared her disappointment. With kids aged eight and ten, she often took them to Smyths for toys. She said it was a go-to spot for birthday gifts and pocket money treats.
“I was gutted when I found out,” she said. The kids are really sad too. It’s a shame to lose a toy shop when there’s already a Lidl nearby.
Chris Taylor, a city councillor, also expressed his sadness. His grandson was in tears when he heard the news. The little guy had a routine of spending his pocket money on toys from Smyths.
“It’s a sad day for Salisbury,” Chris said. He’s worried about the traffic that a new Lidl might bring, but he knows many locals would appreciate having an affordable supermarket.
As for Smyths, a spokesperson thanked their loyal customers and staff, promising to support everyone during this transition. It’s a bittersweet moment for the community.
Lidl’s regional head mentioned they’re excited to bring their store to Salisbury, aiming to make shopping easier for everyone. But for now, the loss of Smyths Toys is what’s on everyone’s mind.
