Two local stores in Thornaby and Hartburn have lost their alcohol licenses due to serious violations
Thornaby: The Oxford Convenience Store and Family Shopper have both lost their alcohol licenses. This decision came after a review due to some serious issues.
Licensing team leader Leanne Maloney pointed out that there were underage sales and other breaches of license conditions. It’s a big deal because it goes against efforts to keep kids safe and prevent crime.
During the hearing, licensing officer Kirsty Wannop shared that underage volunteers were served alcohol at both shops. They also sold alcohol outside of allowed hours, which is a big no-no.
Mr. Theivendram, who holds the licenses for both stores, didn’t have proper training records for his staff. He only provided verbal training, which isn’t enough. Even though he promised to improve, the licensing team wasn’t convinced.
PC Andy Thorpe from the police said they had concerns about the underage sales, even if there weren’t major issues at the Oxford Road shop. He felt it was time for stricter action.
Mr. Theivendram’s representative, Suresh Kanapathi, argued that he was just overwhelmed managing three places. He insisted that it was all human error and that the staff who failed the test are no longer there.
Kanapathi also mentioned that the Family Shopper is new and should be given a chance to improve. But the committee felt that the management wasn’t taking their responsibilities seriously enough.
In the end, both licenses were revoked. Mr. Theivendram can appeal the decision, but for now, he can’t sell alcohol. It’s a tough break for him and the stores.
