London Fire Brigade plans to relocate its headquarters back to Albert Embankment by 2028
London: The London Fire Brigade (LFB) is gearing up to move its headquarters back to Albert Embankment when its lease runs out in two years. This spot was actually their home from 1937 until 2007, so it’s a bit of a homecoming.
Right now, the site is where Lambeth Fire Station is located. If everything checks out with planning and feasibility, they’ll make the move. But if it turns out Albert Embankment isn’t suitable, they might look at Shoreditch Fire Station instead.
They’re expected to leave their current place, which used to be a Royal Mail sorting warehouse on Union Street, by March 2027. A report from January 7 mentioned that they’ve had a tough time subletting parts of the building, which was one of their hopes.
Issues like poor energy performance and the building being too big are also pushing them to find a new spot. They’ve tried to get into the Grade-II Listed Lambeth Fire Station before, but those attempts didn’t pan out.
The report also mentioned that any new headquarters should really reflect LFB’s pride and purpose. If they do end up moving back to Albert Embankment, it could mean better facilities for Lambeth Fire Station and a permanent home for the London Fire Brigade Museum.
But don’t expect the move to happen until late 2028 at the earliest. So, LFB will need to find a temporary place to stay starting in March 2027.
