Arran: So, John Swinney, the First Minister, recently said he really regrets the mess with the new ferries, Glen Sannox and Glen Rosa. They were supposed to be done ages ago, but here we are, years later, and they’re still not ready. The costs have skyrocketed too.

The Glen Sannox, which is the first one to be finished, was meant to start running in 2018. Can you believe it? It’s finally set to carry passengers next week between Arran and Troon.

Because of the construction delays, these ferries can’t even dock safely at Arran’s main port in Ardrossan until they sort out some redevelopment plans, which are still being discussed.

As for the Glen Rosa, it’s expected to be handed over to CalMac in September. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly!

Mr. Swinney shared his thoughts on BBC Radio Scotland, saying he feels terrible about the costs and delays. He really thinks these ferries should have been built much quicker.

He also apologized to the island communities for the hold-ups. He’s all about making sure the islanders get the ferry services they need.

He mentioned that he uses CalMac ferries regularly and understands how crucial they are for island communities.

Besides these two ferries, there are four more being built in Turkey for CalMac. But, of course, global supply chain issues are causing delays there too, which is a bummer.

Still, he reassured everyone that they’re investing in the ferry fleet to support the island communities. He wants to make sure they know the Scottish Government is committed to this.
