Families in Wigan faced devastation as flooding forced evacuations, with firefighters rescuing them by boat to a nearby McDonald’s for safety
Wigan: A family woke up to chaos on New Year’s Day when floodwaters invaded their home. Michael Abram, 46, was jolted from sleep at 6:30 AM to find his car submerged outside. It was a real shocker.
He lives with his wife Stacy and their three kids. They were told their car was underwater, and the firefighters were amazing. They ferried the family to McDonald’s in a boat. Sadly, all their Christmas gifts and belongings on the ground floor were ruined.
Michael was especially grateful that the firefighters saved the urns with his parents’ ashes before the water rose too high. The flooding hit Wigan hard, and many families are now dealing with the aftermath.
Reports say the water reached over four feet deep in some areas, especially on Templeton Road. Firefighters worked tirelessly to help families reach safety. Sadly, local businesses like Iceland and Home Bargains also suffered significant losses.
The Abrams were initially taken to St Nathaniel’s Church, where volunteers welcomed them with open arms. Lisa and Becca, two local volunteers, praised the community for stepping up to help those in need.
Even people with their own storm damage were donating clothes and food. It’s heartwarming to see everyone come together during tough times. But the damage is extensive, and many homes are still without power.
One resident mentioned that it was the first time their street had flooded, and the pumping station just couldn’t handle the volume of water. It was a storm like no other, and the community is now working to recover.
Local businesses are trying to bounce back, with the manager of the Iceland store saying they lost thousands in stock. The community is pulling together, and everyone is doing their best to help each other out.
Wigan council leader praised the emergency teams for their quick response. They’re working with police and health services to ensure everyone is safe. There’s a lot of work ahead, but the community spirit is strong.
MP Josh Simons has even started a crowdfunding page to support those affected. He’s been visiting the impacted areas and is focused on helping residents get the support they need to rebuild.
It’s a tough start to the year for many, but the strength of the community is shining through. Everyone is hopeful for recovery and better flood defenses in the future.
