Residents in Cheadle Hulme are frustrated after flooding damaged homes, blaming the council for not clearing blocked drains despite repeated complaints
Royce described it like a “river of water” rushing into his house. He and his neighbors had been telling the council for ages that the drains were blocked and would overflow. But it seems like no one was listening.
A few homes on Glandon Drive got hit hard, and Royce’s place was one of them. He mentioned that there was about 50cm of water under his floorboards. Thankfully, he had a suspended floor, so the insurance company could help out by pumping the water out.
Now, every time it rains, Royce and his neighbors are on edge, worrying about what might happen next. It’s not just a hassle; it’s likely going to raise everyone’s insurance rates too.
Councillor Peter Crossen, who represents the area, has been vocal about the blocked drains. He’s brought it up with the council multiple times, saying they really need to step up and take care of these basic issues.
He pointed out that it was just a matter of cleaning the grids and gullies, which had been reported several times. They were warned that something bad could happen, and unfortunately, it did.
The council acknowledged that the heavy rain on December 31st and January 1st caused a lot of damage in the area. They’ve promised to review the situation to figure out what went wrong and how to prevent it in the future.
