The tragic death of Constable Rosie Prior has left the community in mourning
Thirsk: It’s such a heartbreaking story. An off-duty policewoman, Constable Rosie Prior, was killed by a lorry while trying to help at a crash scene. A senior officer said she truly represented the best of British policing.
Rosie was on the A19 near Bagby when she came across a road accident. Sadly, an HGV struck her and another man, Ryan Welford, who was involved in the initial crash. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. A teenage boy who was in Ryan’s car is in serious but stable condition at the hospital.
The driver of the lorry, a 65-year-old from Berwick-upon-Tweed, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but has since been released while the investigation continues. Chief Constable Tim Forber praised Rosie, saying she joined the force to help people.
He shared how Rosie wasn’t even on duty that day. She just saw the accident and jumped in to help. It’s so brave of her to put others before herself, and it’s tragic that she lost her life doing what she loved.
Rosie’s family described her as a loving mum and wife who will be deeply missed. The mayor of York and North Yorkshire expressed their sorrow, saying their hearts are broken for the families affected by this tragedy.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper also shared her sadness on social media, highlighting the dedication and bravery of police officers like Rosie. The Police Federation extended their condolences to both families, and the road where the accident happened has now reopened.
North Yorkshire Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage to come forward to help with their investigation.
