A former D.C. police officer was convicted for alerting Proud Boys’ leader about a warrant before the January 6 Capitol attack
Washington D.C.: So, here’s the scoop. Lt. Shane Lamond, a former D.C. police officer, just got found guilty of some serious stuff. He lied to the cops about giving info to Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio before the Capitol riot on January 6.
Lamond, who used to run the Intelligence Branch, had a pretty cozy relationship with Tarrio. Prosecutors say he even tipped him off about a warrant for his arrest related to a protest incident. When the investigators came knocking, Lamond didn’t tell the truth.
U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves made it clear that Lamond flipped his role upside down. Instead of gathering intel, he was handing it out. That’s a big no-no, especially for someone in his position.
After a week-long trial, Judge Amy Berman Jackson found him guilty of obstruction and lying to investigators. Graves pointed out that Lamond’s actions put the community at risk, which is a serious breach of trust.
The Proud Boys, as you might know, are a far-right group known for their violent antics and extremist views. They were heavily involved in the Capitol chaos, believing the election was stolen from Trump.
Interestingly, Trump has shown some support for the Proud Boys in the past, telling them to “stand back and stand by.” It’s a wild connection, right?
Lamond and Tarrio had been in touch regularly since 2019, but things got a bit more secretive after the election. Lamond even shared confidential info about a BLM banner incident with Tarrio before the riot.
During the trial, Lamond’s defense tried to spin their relationship as just a source thing, but the judge wasn’t buying it. She pointed out that he was sharing too much sensitive info and seemed to sympathize with their views.
Now, Lamond is set to be sentenced on April 3, 2025. It’s a pretty big deal, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens next.
