Stuart Hogg, the former Scotland rugby captain, faces sentencing for domestic abuse against his estranged wife over five years
Selkirk: So, former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg has found himself in a pretty tough spot. He was sentenced recently for abusing his estranged wife over five years. It’s a real shame to see someone with such a big name in sports facing these kinds of issues.
At Selkirk Sheriff Court, he got a community payback order and a year of supervision. Plus, there’s a five-year non-harassment order in place. It’s serious stuff. Hogg had pleaded guilty to domestic abuse, which took place between 2019 and 2024 in various locations, including Hawick and Bearsden.
What’s even more troubling is that he sent his ex-wife around 200 text messages in just a few hours after their split. He also tracked her location using phone apps. Can you imagine? He would come home from nights out and shout at her while she was upstairs with their kids. That’s just not right.
During his rants, he told her she was “not being fun,” which left her wishing for morning to come. Hogg, who had a stellar rugby career with 100 caps for Scotland, admitted that his messages were alarming and distressing. It’s hard to believe someone who was once a role model could act this way.
Now, he’s playing for a French club after having stints with Glasgow Warriors and Exeter Chiefs. He was Scotland’s captain for three years before stepping away from international rugby. It’s a big fall from grace.
Hogg is currently going through a divorce, and his ex-girlfriend has spoken out about his drinking and behavior. She claims that his lifestyle led to his exit from the Scotland squad. It’s a messy situation, and it seems like he’s been struggling for a while.
In a recent call, he mentioned that something bad had happened and needed time away. But it sounds like he was dealing with a lot more than just rugby injuries. His drinking and personal issues seem to have played a huge role in his departure.
Scottish Rugby said he retired due to the toll rugby took on his body, but it’s clear there’s more to the story. Hogg was even awarded an MBE for his contributions to rugby, which makes this whole situation even more shocking.
