The Glasgow Academy bought Kelvinbridge Parish Church in the West End for £350,000. The church will no longer be a worship place.

The school said they will fix up the building and plan to use it as a flexible space to host activities and events. The Academy wants a dedicated space for pupils.

An Academy spokesperson spoke about the plan, stating they worked on this for 18 months. The school thinks the site will be useful, but the upgrade depends on planning permission.

Gordon Kirkwood, the church’s reverend, is thankful the Academy bought the church. He thinks its history will be honored and that new uses will emerge under the school’s care.

He said the agreement builds on a long relationship and secures the building’s future. Unique features will be preserved, including the organ and stained glass, benefiting everyone.

The Academy rep called it historic, noting the building is a landmark offering flexible spaces. These spaces support many activities, improving the provision for all students.

The Garriochmill Road church closed earlier, with its members joining Wellington Parish Church. A Church of Scotland spokesperson confirmed it, stating this move was part of a wider plan. Kelvinbridge had too few regular worshippers. Ultimately, they could not keep up the building and sharing with Wellington creates a stronger mission serving the city’s West End.
