Glasgow is gearing up for its 850th anniversary, inviting locals to participate in a year-long celebration filled with exciting events and activities
Glasgow: The city council kicked off its Glasgow 850 programme today in George Square. This celebration marks 850 years since Glasgow became a Burgh in 1175.
Council leader Susan Aitken shared her excitement about the events planned for this milestone. She mentioned that the programme will have something for everyone, from arts and culture to food and music.
Signature events include the Clyde Chorus, happening along the river at the end of May, and a People’s Palace Pop-Up exhibition touring the city from June to November. There’s even a special event in April to celebrate Glasgow’s food scene.
To support these festivities, the Glasgow 850 Festival Fund has been set up. Highlights include a special comedy event and free cinema days during the Glasgow Film Festival.
There are also plans for events in July to honor St Enoch, the mother of St Mungo, and an October celebration of Glasgow’s Gaelic heritage.
This summer, Glasgow 850 will back Glasgow Life’s Summer of Fun activities, helping young people stay active during the holidays.
First Bus is getting involved too, with a bright pink bus to celebrate the anniversary and support the Clyde Chorus event. Graeme Macfarlan from First Bus expressed their delight in being part of this historic celebration.
Organizers are inviting everyone connected to Glasgow to join in, share their stories, and explore their city. For more details on events and volunteering, check out glasgow850.com.
