Gordon Brown defends himself against Elon Musk’s accusations regarding grooming gangs
London: So, Gordon Brown is firing back at Elon Musk. Musk claimed Brown committed an “unforgivable crime” related to the grooming gangs issue. Brown called Musk’s comments a “complete fabrication” and accused him of spreading lies about child exploitation.
This all started after Musk and Labour leader Keir Starmer exchanged some heated words. Musk’s attacks were based on a claim that Brown’s government told police in 2008 to stay out of certain cases. Brown firmly denied this, saying it never happened.
In a response to a clip from a former police officer, Musk demanded an explanation from Brown. He went on to say that Brown “sold those little girls for votes,” which is a pretty serious accusation.
Brown’s spokesperson quickly shot back, saying there’s no truth to Musk’s claims. They emphasized that Brown had no involvement in any police circular and that the allegations are baseless.
Starmer also got involved, eventually saying that Musk and others spreading misinformation about child abuse have “crossed a line.” He pointed out that those pushing these false narratives aren’t interested in victims but in their own agendas.
Brown’s team stressed that the focus should be on justice for survivors and holding perpetrators accountable. They believe that spreading lies only distracts from the real issues at hand.
Musk seems to be using the grooming gangs topic to stir up controversy, even though there was already an inquiry into the matter. Critics argue that his calls for a new national inquiry are unnecessary.
Meanwhile, Labour is committed to implementing recommendations from previous inquiries, while the government claims it’s working on reforms to address the abuse that’s been found to be widespread in society.
Yvette Cooper mentioned that professionals working with children could face criminal charges if they fail to report any suspected abuse, which is a significant step forward.
