A Greggs store in London has resorted to padlocking fridges to deter shoplifters targeting the popular food chain
London: Staff at a Greggs in Leicester Square are on high alert. Thieves have been making off with items while employees are busy serving other customers. It’s a real problem!
To tackle this, the store has locked up its drinks cabinet. They’re trying to outsmart the shoplifters who seem to be everywhere. It’s wild how quickly these thieves can grab stuff and disappear.
There’s even footage showing the padlock securing the fridge. Last year, the flagship store in Leicester Square had to hire a security guard because of the ongoing thefts.
At another location in London Bridge, staff were given body cameras to help with security. It’s clear that shoplifting is a big issue for them.
One witness shared a story about two teens at a Greggs in Ealing Broadway. They just walked in, stuffed sandwiches in their pockets, and casually walked out while the staff were distracted.
Another incident happened in Brentford, where a guy pretended to browse and then boldly walked out with a meal deal. It’s like they’re playing a game of cat and mouse!
With so many people around, it’s no wonder these places are easy targets. Other chains are facing similar issues, with thieves hitting Tesco stores and even mobile phone shops.
Supermarkets are now locking up pricey items like steak and alcohol because shoplifting is on the rise. Greggs has been contacted for a comment, but it’s clear they’re taking steps to protect their goods.
