New report reveals prior accusations against guards involved in Brooks’ death
New York: So, there’s been a really disturbing story coming out of a prison in upstate New York. Three corrections officers are in hot water after being linked to the beating death of an inmate named Robert Brooks. This guy was handcuffed when it happened, which makes it even worse.
Brooks, who was 43, died just a day after the incident at the Marcy Correctional Facility. It turns out these officers had been accused of similar violent behavior before. Can you believe that? They were named in lawsuits for beating up other inmates, leaving one guy disfigured and another in a wheelchair.
A lawyer for one of those previous inmates is really upset. She said the state’s corrections department knew about these officers’ past but didn’t do anything to stop them. That negligence, she argues, played a big role in Brooks’ tragic death.
Recently, shocking bodycam footage was released showing the guards beating Brooks while he was restrained. They went at him for about 20 minutes, hitting him in the head, chest, and even in the groin. It’s just heartbreaking to think about.
Brooks had been serving a 12-year sentence for first-degree assault since 2017. After his death, the state’s attorney general opened an investigation, and now, one officer has resigned while 13 others have been suspended without pay. The governor is calling for everyone involved to be fired.
What’s even crazier is that the same officers were involved in other assaults. One inmate, Adam Bauer, claimed he was beaten in a bathroom and then falsely accused of attacking the guards. It’s like a pattern of abuse that just keeps repeating itself.
Another inmate, William Alvarez, had a similar experience. He was pepper-sprayed and beaten while cleaning a bathroom. Both of these guys ended up in solitary confinement for months after being falsely accused. It’s just a mess.
It’s really sad to see how these officers have been allowed to act this way for so long. Hopefully, this will lead to some real changes in the system.
