Some of the top attractions are either keeping their visitor numbers steady or even seeing more folks come through the doors. For instance, the Roman Army Museum at Greenhead had a fantastic 15% increase in visitors compared to last year.
Plus, more people are using public transport to get around. The Go North East AD122 bus route and the Tyne Valley Railway both saw impressive increases in passenger numbers. That’s a win for everyone!
This news comes after the unfortunate felling of the Sycamore Gap tree last year, which had many worried about how it would affect tourism. But it looks like the area is bouncing back nicely.
Ongoing investments in tourism infrastructure are really helping to enhance the visitor experience in Hadrian’s Wall Country. There’s a £9 million boost from the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal aimed at developing attractions and improving what’s already there.
Lady Jane Gibson, chairwoman of the Hadrian’s Wall Partnership Board, expressed her delight at the strong visitor numbers. She mentioned that many people are coming to enjoy what the area has to offer throughout the year.
She also reflected on the sadness surrounding the Sycamore Gap incident but emphasized that the latest visitor data shows the resilience of the region and its attractions.
Dr. Andrew Birley, CEO of the Vindolanda Trust, shared his happiness about the sustained visitor figures across the attractions. It’s clear that places like the Roman Army Museum and Vindolanda are thriving.
Jordan Dodwell, who runs the Greenhead Hotel in Brampton, highlighted the importance of the investments being made. They’re not just preserving the ancient structures but also boosting the local economy. It’s fantastic to see the community benefiting from the increased foot traffic!
