Following a schoolgirl’s accident, Handsworth is now a focus for council efforts to improve road safety and curb reckless driving.
Birmingham: Recently, Handsworth has been flagged as a top concern for the council after a schoolgirl was hit by a car. This incident happened on Crocketts Road, and it’s got everyone talking.
There’s footage of the crash that’s too upsetting to share, but it shows the girl flipping over the car and landing on the ground. Thankfully, she only had minor injuries.
This isn’t the first time Crocketts Road has seen tragedy. Back in 2019, a woman named Sarah Handley lost her life in a horrific crash on the same street. She was in a car with her partner, who was driving recklessly during a police chase.
Chad Miah, a local dad, expressed his frustration about the reckless driving in the area. He’s had enough of the “lunatic drivers” speeding through the neighborhood.
Chad is calling on the Birmingham City Council to put in a pedestrian crossing and speed bumps to prevent future accidents. He’s worried that another life could be lost if nothing changes.
He described the junction as a “deathtrap” and mentioned that the road feels like a racetrack. With schools, shops, and homes nearby, it’s a busy area that needs attention.
The council has acknowledged the issue, stating they’re very concerned about the number of accidents happening on Birmingham roads. They’ve recognized Handsworth as a priority area for improving safety.
A spokesperson for the council mentioned that they’re working with West Midlands Police to address illegal driving and parking. They’re also planning to create safer spaces for walking and cycling in the neighborhood.
