An independent review reveals widespread issues within the fire service, including bullying, discrimination, and sexual harassment experiences.
Over 400 fire service staff shared their experiences. Many told about serious issues they faced at work. Bullying and harassment are common, the report stated. Almost half the staff had personal experiences since June 2021.
More than half witnessed such negative actions. One in five people faced discrimination. Ten percent of the female staff faced sexual harassment.
The report also criticized the fire service’s systems. Disciplinary actions seemed unfair and ineffective. Most staff said voicing concerns was good in theory. However, few actually reported bad behavior.
Only seventeen percent did this consistently. Staff also felt overworked and without enough support. Leaders plan to act on what the report recommends.
Fire Authority Chair Gwynfor Thomas feels saddened by the review. He appreciates the staff’s honest feedback. Roger Thomas, the Chief Fire Officer, aims for a safer place.
He knows more work remains despite progress already made. Thomas promises swift action on needed changes. Chief Officer Thomas apologized to colleagues facing issues. He finds bullying, harassment, and bias unacceptable. He fully accepts what the review found.
