Street artist Hendog expresses outrage after his mural is vandalized with hate speech in Newbury town centre
Newbury: So, there’s been some drama in Newbury. The artist known as Hendog is pretty upset after his mural, “The Haribo Proposal,” got vandalized. This mural, which shows a schoolboy proposing to a schoolgirl with a Haribo ring, was a hit in the town.
It was painted on the north side of the New American Bridge and has been a favorite spot for locals to snap photos. But over the weekend, some graffiti artist calling themselves the ‘Hangman’ decided to mess with it. They painted over parts of the mural and added some pretty crude stuff.
To make matters worse, they also sprayed some really nasty phrases that were racist, homophobic, and misogynistic. Hendog was understandably outraged. He said it’s concerning to see such hate in the community.
He pointed out that people who do this just want attention, and it’s sad that we give it to them. He believes that acts like this go against the spirit of street art, which should be about positivity and accessibility.
Despite the vandalism, Hendog is grateful for the love his mural has received. He wants his art to be for everyone. The local council acted quickly to clean up the mess, and they’re taking this seriously. No one should have to deal with that kind of hate in their community.
