Inverness: The Highland Council is kicking off a consultation to make the 20mph speed limits permanent. This will last for five weeks, giving folks a chance to weigh in.

The temporary speed limits started back in July 2023, covering over 100 areas in the Highlands. You can check out the maps online to see where these limits apply.

Councillor Ken Gowans, who chairs the economy and infrastructure committee, mentioned that they’re in the final stretch of this project. They really want to make streets safer and promote healthier travel options.

Studies show that slowing down traffic in residential areas can make a big difference. It helps keep everyone safer and encourages people to walk or bike more, which is great for the community.

This consultation is a chance for locals to share their thoughts on the new speed limits in their neighborhoods. If you have any comments or concerns, make sure to send them in by February 10.

You can email your feedback to 20mph@highland.gov.uk or mail it to the Road Safety Team at Glenurquhart Road, Inverness, IV3 5NX.

After the consultation, a report will go to the economy and infrastructure committee in May for a final decision. Plus, Transport Scotland has extended the temporary speed limits until July 2025, so there’s plenty of time to gather input.

All the costs for rolling out this 20mph scheme are covered by Transport Scotland, including surveys and evaluations to see how well it’s working.
