HIOWAA reports a record 2,544 emergency calls in 2024, highlighting a significant rise in demand for critical care services across Hampshire.
Southampton: The air ambulance service has been super busy this year. They responded to a whopping 2,544 calls, which is the highest ever in a single year for them.
That’s nearly a 40% jump from last year when they had 1,842 calls. It’s clear that more people are needing help than ever before.
Most of the calls were for serious stuff like cardiac arrests, car accidents, and other medical emergencies. These made up over 80% of their call-outs.
The areas with the most incidents included Southampton, Portsmouth, and Basingstoke, with Southampton leading the pack at 659 calls.
Interestingly, for the first time, they used their road vehicles more than helicopters to respond to emergencies. They did 53% of their calls by road, which is a big change.
Mark Durell, a specialist paramedic, mentioned how remarkable the past year has been for their service. The demand for their Critical Care Paramedic response has really shot up.
He said they’re reaching more patients than ever, which is fantastic because it means lifesaving help is available when it’s needed most.
Richard Corbett, the charity’s CEO, expressed pride in the team’s response. He noted that while the rising demand can be concerning, it also means they’re able to help more people get back to their loved ones.
The charity is currently working hard to raise £3.6 million for their Operation Airbase appeal, which will help move their base closer to Southampton Airport.
