Norbury: One of the oldest tennis clubs in the world is in a bit of a pickle. Norbury Park Lawn Tennis Club is trying to save its home after Croydon council decided to sell the land.

Founded way back in 1889, this club has been a staple in the community for over 136 years. But now, they need to raise funds to buy the land, and the clock is ticking.

Club members and locals are stepping up to help out. Lisa Patient, the fundraising manager, mentioned that they don’t have a huge membership base or wealthy supporters like some other clubs do.

They’ve set up a GoFundMe page, and it’s gaining traction. So far, they’ve raised nearly £14,000 of their £25,000 goal through donations and events. Every little bit helps!

This club isn’t just about tennis; it’s a vital part of the community. They offer programs for kids, including those with disabilities, and even have a nursery in their clubhouse. It’s a place where families can come together.

Blaise Westmaas, the club chairman, believes it’s more than just a tennis club; it’s a cornerstone of the community. Local residents agree, highlighting the health benefits and the need for affordable community spaces.

Even local MP Steve Reed is backing the club, urging everyone to support their fundraising efforts. He knows how important this facility is for Norbury and the surrounding areas.

Membership is pretty affordable at £25 a month for adults, with family packages available too. They also offer tennis lessons and camps for kids during school breaks.

If you want to help out, donations can be made to the Save Norbury Park Lawn Tennis Club Campaign. Every contribution counts!
