Speed cameras can now catch you from over a kilometer away, surprising many drivers
London: The Department for Transport announced that all speed cameras were to be painted yellow by October 2016. This was meant to make them easier to spot. But what if a speed camera is so far away that you can’t see it at all?
Believe it or not, those cameras are out there. So, how far can they actually catch you speeding?
Introducing the Long Ranger mobile speed cameras. These bad boys have a range of over 1 kilometer, earning them the nickname ‘Lone Ranger’. They’re the longest-distance speed enforcers on UK roads.
Not only do they catch speeders, but they can also record drivers who aren’t wearing seatbelts or are using their phones while driving. Pretty impressive, right?
RAC road safety spokesperson Pete Williams mentioned that while these long-range cameras could be used for various offenses, their main goal will likely be to catch speeding drivers. He added that some folks might be shocked when they get a notice in the mail after thinking they slowed down in time.
So, what happens if you get caught speeding? The minimum penalty is usually a £100 fine and three points on your license. If it’s your first offense and you don’t have any points, you might even get offered a speed awareness course instead.
There are a ton of different speed cameras out there on British roads, so it’s best to stay alert!
