Bill McEwen, a beloved Inverness chemist, is remembered for his kindness and his role in the Loch Ness Monster hoax.
He ran Ogston’s Chemists for many years, where he mixed medicines and built strong relationships with locals. Bill was also a big part of Nairn Golf Club, serving as captain and helping to bring the 1999 Walker Cup to the area.
But what many might not know is that Bill had a unique connection to the Loch Ness Monster. He discovered original photographic plates of the famous Surgeon’s Photograph, which turned out to be a hoax. His son Kevin shared that Bill printed postcards of the photo, which were a hit with tourists.
Bill was born in Huntly and had a rich life filled with family and friends. He loved golf and was heavily involved in the local community. His kindness and gentle nature left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
As the community mourns his loss, Bill’s legacy will surely live on in the hearts of those he touched. He was a true gentleman, and his contributions to Inverness and beyond will not be forgotten.
