The Metropolitan Police faces scrutiny over its handling of sexual assault claims against Mohamed al-Fayed following new complaints.
London: So, there’s a big investigation going on with the Metropolitan Police. They’re looking into how they handled some serious sexual assault allegations against Mohamed al-Fayed.
Apparently, two people have come forward, saying the police didn’t do a good job with their complaints. The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards is on it, and the Independent Office for Police Conduct is overseeing everything.
This all started when the IOPC got some referrals from the Met last November. These complaints date back to 2008, which is quite a while ago. It seems like there were concerns about how the police dealt with these allegations.
Now, just to clarify, no charges were ever filed against al-Fayed before he passed away last year. The Met is also reviewing 21 other allegations that were reported before his death.
The IOPC is keeping in touch with the Met to see if there’s more to investigate. Steve Noonan, the IOPC Director of Operations, expressed sympathy for the victims and emphasized the public’s concern over this case.
He mentioned that it’s crucial to look into these complaints to see if there were any missed chances or failures in the investigation back in 2008. They want to make sure everything is handled properly.
Plus, they’re keeping the complainants updated throughout the process, which is good to hear. It sounds like this could get bigger than just the two complaints they’re currently looking into.
