Ipswich residents may soon voice their opinions on local heritage buildings
Ipswich: The community is about to get a chance to weigh in on which historic buildings in Ipswich should get some extra protection.
Next Tuesday, the Ipswich Borough Council’s executive committee is likely to give the green light for a two-part consultation to refresh the local list.
Now, local listing isn’t the same as national protections, but it does highlight what folks in the area value.
Take The Cricketers in the town center, for example. This designation will be considered when planning new developments.
Cllr Carole Jones mentioned that they’re eager to hear from residents or groups about which buildings should be on the list.
The last time Ipswich updated its local list was back in 2021.
They’re looking for buildings that are historically or architecturally significant or that add to the town’s character, according to Cllr Jones.
The first stage of the consultation will ask the community to point out any ‘underdesignated’ buildings that fit the bill.
After that, an internal panel will narrow down the options before the public gets to weigh in on which assets should make the final list.
Cllr Jones added that the Local List is crucial for protecting buildings that are key to Ipswich’s heritage and will be considered in future planning decisions.
