Killyman: Recently, the folks in Killyman have been buzzing about a growing problem with dog mess. It seems like every time you turn around, someone’s posting about it in the local online group.

The Killyman Chit Chat group has been filled with complaints, especially over the holidays. People are really fed up with what they call ‘selfish’ dog owners, and some have even shared some pretty unpleasant photos to back it up.

One resident, who didn’t want to share their name, mentioned they’ve lived in Killyman for nearly a decade and said the dog mess situation is the worst it’s ever been. They’ve noticed it getting worse over the last six months, and during a recent walk, they counted over 25 spots where dogs had done their business.

It’s not just a minor issue; it’s everywhere! The footpaths are a mess, and it’s making it tough for families. One dad even stopped taking his kids out because he didn’t want their pram wheels getting dirty.

People are calling the area a “minefield” because of all the mess. The spot outside the Primary School has been flagged as a major concern, too.

In a creative twist, one local has started making homemade pet waste bag dispensers from old milk bottles. They shared a photo online, hoping it would encourage others to pitch in and keep the village clean.

Killyman is part of the Mid Ulster Council area, and it seems like this issue is popping up all over the place, especially in the Armagh, Banbridge, and Craigavon areas. Enforcement is tricky, and it feels like the topic just keeps coming back.

Last month, the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council faced some heat for not handing out enough fines for littering and dog mess. They’re currently looking into a particularly bad area in Newry.

As for Killyman, the resident mentioned that Councillor Clement Cuthbertson has been quite helpful. He’s been vocal about the ongoing dog fouling problem, not just in Killyman but across the Dungannon area.

Cllr Cuthbertson pointed out that while most dog owners are responsible, there’s still a small group that doesn’t clean up after their pets. He’s even pushed for more bins to help tackle the issue.

A spokesperson for Mid Ulster Council said they haven’t heard of any increase in dog fouling in Killyman. They noted that while most dog owners do the right thing, it’s tough to catch those who don’t, especially since many will pick up after their dog if they see someone watching.

They encouraged anyone with specific concerns to reach out to the Council so they can keep an eye on the situation. They also reminded everyone that failing to clean up after your dog could lead to a £50 fine or even prosecution.
