Labour MPs form a group to tackle Reform UK’s rising support in key areas. They will address migration and promote local improvements.
One MP said this shows where things are going, adding that the MPs will talk about migration and push for local improvements. The MP described them as a “fearless bunch” who will be direct and honest about issues.
Some Labour MPs worry that good things get missed, such as nationalizing railways or the new deal for workers. They want to work together to tackle Reform’s threat, but won’t criticize Keir Starmer directly.
Downing Street is providing help by sending data and strategy experts. These experts will advise MPs on messages that resonate with Reform voters.
A Labour source said MPs meet often to discuss various issues. Labour MPs are particularly worried about Nigel Farage’s plans, seeing a potential shift towards making people pay for NHS services. They will fight him and other parties in parliament and at elections.
Farage has stated he is open to NHS changes and likes France’s healthcare system, describing it as an insurance scheme where people pay in. Labour MPs, including Wes Streeting, have criticized these comments.
Reform’s rise recently hurt the Tories the most, but polls now show a threat to Keir Starmer, despite his win six months ago. A YouGov Sky News poll showed Reform leading with 25%, followed by Labour at 24% and the Tories at 21%.
Pollsters noted the lead was within the margin of error, while other polls showed Farage gaining popularity and Starmer’s popularity dropping. Experts see this as a loss of belief that parties can improve lives. Reform will face a test in May’s local elections and hope to win seats next year in Wales.
