Lancashire: Thousands of households in tough spots are getting help to stay warm this winter. The Cadent Foundation is rolling out its Winter Warmer Campaign, teaming up with Groundwork to hand out nearly 5,000 winter packs until March.

These packs are a lifesaver for those in need, filled with essentials like hot water bottles, gloves, scarves, hats, and blankets. Groundwork will distribute them from community hubs and through food banks across East Lancashire.

This campaign is in its fifth year and has already supported around 20,000 people in the UK, with Cadent donating over £800,000 worth of items. This year’s launch comes at a time when many are facing tough challenges, especially with rising energy costs.

In September, the government made changes to the Winter Fuel Allowance, cutting eligibility for many. Plus, around 400,000 households have slipped into fuel poverty due to soaring energy bills, according to National Energy Action.

Julia Dwyer from the Cadent Foundation said that fuel poverty is a big issue right now. Many families are scared to turn on their heating because of the costs, making the Winter Warmer Campaign even more crucial.

She added that the packs are meant to provide immediate relief for those needing extra warmth this winter, and they’re committed to working with charity partners to support vulnerable people.

Graham Duxbury, Groundwork’s Chief Executive, mentioned that winter can be a scary time for many, with financial worries and health risks. Their Green Doctors meet people in need every day, so providing immediate help while also offering long-term solutions is really important.

The winter warmer packs are part of Groundwork’s Green Doctor program, which gives free advice on saving energy and managing bills. The Cadent Foundation aims to help households find sustainable ways to tackle fuel poverty and keep warm.
