Liverpool: Richard Hughes, a resident, is fed up with the state of his street. He says it’s just plain depressing. He’s been living in Abingdon Grove for 24 years, and things have taken a turn for the worse.

He describes a scene where rats seem to rule the street, casually strolling around like they own the place. Richard jokes that some of them look like they could be wearing Nike 110s and have tattoos. It’s a wild image, but he’s serious about the problem.

Richard owns his flat, but the housing association, Torus, manages the area. They recently switched to communal Eurobins for waste collection, hoping to improve things. But Richard says it’s only made matters worse. The bins are collected every two weeks, and that’s just not enough.

He’s complained to both Torus and the council, but they seem to be passing the buck on who should handle the overflowing bins. It’s frustrating for him, especially since he sees the mess every day on his way home from work.

With rubbish piling up, the rat problem has gotten out of hand. Richard, who drives a taxi, sees these rats out in broad daylight. He’s worried about the health risks and the overall state of his neighborhood.

Coming home to a street littered with trash and rats is disheartening. Richard feels he’s paying for services that just aren’t cutting it. He believes residents deserve better, especially when they’re paying Council Tax and service charges.

The ECHO reached out to Torus and Liverpool City Council about Richard’s concerns. Torus mentioned they’ve been out to the area and that the council has cleared some rubbish. But Richard isn’t convinced that’s enough.

Both organizations had previously expressed hope that the new bins would improve cleanliness and reduce pest issues. But for Richard, the reality is far from that. He just wants a clean and safe place to live.
