Several schools in County Durham remain closed due to ongoing weather-related issues, affecting students and families in the area.
County Durham: The snow might be gone in some areas, but a few schools are still shut down today. It’s January 7, and after the holiday break, the weather really threw a wrench in things.
On Monday, a bunch of schools had to close because of the snow and freezing temperatures. It caused a lot of trouble for traffic and transport too. Even though there are no new weather warnings this week, it’s still pretty chilly out there. Darlington is expecting to hit -6 degrees tonight!
Right now, three schools in the Durham County Council area are still closed. First up is Lanchester EP Primary School, which is shut today but plans to reopen on January 8. They’re dealing with a burst pipe in the KS1 area, so only years 1 and 2 are affected for now.
Next is St Stephens CE Primary School in Willington. They’ve got no heating, which isn’t great, and the authority is on it, hoping to have everything fixed by Wednesday.
Lastly, The Meadows School in Spennymoor is closed too. They’ve got some damage from the bad weather, which has led to electrical issues, making the site unsafe for students. They’re working on getting that sorted out.
