Some big London venues might have to change their licenses. This follows noise complaints from nearby residents. Sadiq Khan started a new nightlife group to help.

Khan thinks lifestyles changed after the pandemic. City Hall changed rules to help venues and residents. The taskforce has eleven experts and will study nightlife issues for six months.

Cameron Leslie from Fabric leads the group. Amy Lamé quit as night czar last year. Khan promised this taskforce before and the group will decide about replacing Lamé.

City Hall said the taskforce will meet often and will discuss problems and chances for London nightlife. Khan believes nighttime businesses are key for London.

Khan said businesses face rising costs and staffing issues. He wants to assist nightlife industries, and Leslie looks forward to the city’s nightlife future. He knows it faces tough times.

Venue owners say licenses are too strict and force places to shut too early. A pub had rules added due to neighbor’s noise complaints. Greggs faced limits on late hours.

Khan does not think “NIMBYism” is the main issue; rather, new buildings near clubs cause complaints. New developers must pay for soundproofing, which helps keep peace.

Khan said London needs peaceful residents and good businesses. Some residents worry about the night economy. Twelve London councils now have night plans, and City Hall aids them.

Khan heard customer habits changed and said closing at 10 PM works for some people. The taskforce will look at post-pandemic changes. He mentioned “Thursday is the new Friday.”

Emma Best thinks the taskforce already knows the answers and says Khan should act faster. She created a report with solutions he ignored and wants Khan to take real action.

Michael Kill said a 24-hour city needs more than late hours. He mentioned licensing limits and rising costs. He believes London needs more support for nightlife and better infrastructure too.
