Shoplifting in London surges by 50%. High living costs and many shops are blamed.
The Office for National Statistics released data showing a rapid rise in shoplifting. Police recorded over 80,000 offenses between September 2023 and September 2024. The year before, this number was around 53,000.
England and Wales only saw a 22% increase, way less than London’s massive 50%. Shoplifting went from 402,482 to 492,914 overall, signaling London as a major problem area.
The mayor cited a London School of Economics report linking rising living costs to crime. He clarified that this doesn’t excuse criminals. Theft, robbery, and shoplifting are all demonstrably up.
Khan explained why London’s increase is greater, reiterating the high cost of living. He highlighted the sheer number of shops as another contributing factor and conveyed his concern about personal theft.
He supports local police teams and even joined officers on patrols. They used facial recognition to help shops, which helped lower crime rates in specific areas.
The Home Secretary scheduled a meeting where shoplifting will be discussed, which Khan welcomes. Khan also frequently talks to shop owners and stays informed about attacks on retail workers.
Khan used to work in retail jobs and feels this issue personally. It’s important to him and Londoners.
