Commuters in London took matters into their own hands, confronting a suspected pickpocketer at Leicester Square Tube station.
London: So, there was this wild scene at Leicester Square station. Commuters were fed up and decided to help catch a guy they thought was a pickpocketer. It all went down on the Northern Line, and let me tell you, it was quite the spectacle.
People were shouting at this guy as he was being arrested. One woman in a white coat was really fired up, yelling things like, “I want to punch you!” It was intense. The police had to step in and tell her to back off or she might get in trouble herself.
In the video, you can see the plain-clothed officers pushing the suspect against the wall. It’s a bit chaotic, but you can feel the frustration of the commuters. They’ve had enough of theft on the Tube.
British Transport Police confirmed they got a call about a theft at around 7:20 PM. An off-duty officer had already detained the guy. Turns out, he was also wanted for a few other thefts. He’s out on bail now, but it’s clear that pickpocketing is a big issue in London.
Between March 2023 and 2024, there were over 79,000 reports of pickpocketing in the city. Westminster was hit the hardest, with a staggering increase in thefts. It’s no wonder people are getting so worked up about it.
