This birthday is a far cry from what she used to have before her arrest for the tragic murders of newborns at the Countess of Chester Hospital. She was found guilty of killing seven babies and attempting to kill seven more. Now, she’s got a life sentence hanging over her.
Letby turns 35 on January 4, and it sounds like it’ll be just another day in prison for her. No celebrations, just the usual routine at HMP Bronzefield. A retired prison governor, Vanessa Frake, mentioned that she’ll have to keep her guard up, especially since she’s a high-profile inmate.
Vanessa said, “Her birthday will be like any other day in prison! No cake, no candles, just the same old routine.” If she gets any cards, they’ll be checked for drugs. It’s a pretty grim situation.
At HMP Bronzefield, there are around 572 women, and they have a pretty structured day. They get unlocked in the morning, have lessons or work, and then it’s back to their cells for the night. But for Letby, being a notorious child killer means she’ll have to watch her back constantly.
She’s in a vulnerable prisoner unit, and it’s not going to be easy for her. Other inmates might not take kindly to her past. Vanessa also mentioned that whether Letby is on suicide watch will depend on a risk assessment, not just from other prisoners but based on her own mental state.
Over the holidays, she won’t be getting any gifts from her parents either. There are strict rules about visits during Christmas, so it’s likely they won’t be able to see her privately. It’s a tough situation all around.
