Stourport Civic Society unveils exciting new plans for the Bridge Street car park area
Stourport: The Stourport Civic Society has been busy lately. They just got approval for an Asset of Community Value application. This is a big deal because it helps protect the land after the Wyre Forest District Council announced plans to sell the car park.
Remember the old plans? They wanted to turn the former Lloyds Garage site into a gateway to the town’s historic basins. The council bought that land over ten years ago, but things didn’t pan out as expected.
Now, the civic society has come up with a fresh proposal. They’re talking about 14,000 square feet of commercial, retail, and leisure space, plus 22 new apartments. Sounds promising, right?
But wait, there’s more! They also want to spruce up the basin area with new quays, footpaths, and street trees. Plus, they’re looking to add long-term boat moorings. And they plan to widen the lower part of Engine Lane to make it easier for cars and pedestrians to get around.
Andrew Booton, the chairman of the civic society, is really excited about this project. He mentioned that their updated proposal simplifies things, reduces risks, and makes it financially viable. It’s also quicker to deliver and has support from local businesses.
He believes this plan will create jobs, attract new residents, and boost the town’s long-term vitality. The civic society is all about enhancing the character of Bridge Street and revitalizing this important gateway to Stourport.
They’ve worked with experienced town planners and developers to make sure everything is solid. Meanwhile, the council is looking to close the temporary car park and sell the land since they haven’t found a viable development for it.
Councillor Dan Morehead expressed disappointment over the situation, noting that market forces haven’t been favorable for years. It’s a tough spot for the council.
Mr. Booton emphasized that the civic society is dedicated to representing the community’s interests. He believes planning should involve local people, not just be done to them.
They’re hoping to have constructive talks with the council. If the land goes up for sale, their designation as an Asset of Community Value gives them a chance to bid on it.
