Glasgow: So, it turns out that almost two-thirds of trans women in prison are actually sex offenders. This shocking info comes straight from the Ministry of Justice. Can you believe it?

According to the stats, 151 out of 245 trans women inmates have committed at least one sexual offence. That’s a whopping 62 percent of those who don’t have a Gender Recognition Certificate.

And get this—the number of trans prisoners without official gender recognition has jumped by nearly 10 percent, now sitting at 295 in 2024. It’s a big deal.

Remember Isla Bryson? She was sent to Scotland’s only women’s jail after being convicted of raping two women back in February 2023. That case really stirred things up.

Official figures also show there are 50 prisoners who identify as trans but are legally female, which is a 13.6 percent increase from last year. It’s a lot to unpack.

Interestingly, only 10 prisoners have a full Gender Recognition Certificate, meaning they’ve legally changed their gender. But the data doesn’t say where these inmates are placed in the system.

New rules are now in place about where transgender prisoners can be housed in the UK. It’s a response to the growing concerns about safety and regulations.

Trans prisoners who identify as women but still have male genitalia can’t be in female jails. Plus, those with violent sexual convictions are also barred unless there are really special circumstances.

These changes come after the uproar over Isla Bryson’s case, where she started identifying as a trans woman while waiting for her trial. It raised a lot of eyebrows.

Bryson was found guilty of two rapes and got an eight-year sentence. Initially, she was placed in an all-female prison, which caused a public outcry and led to her being moved to a male facility.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Justice mentioned that over 90 percent of trans women in custody are in men’s prisons. Those with sexual or violent convictions can’t be in women’s prisons unless it’s a rare situation.
