A man faces charges for allegedly raping a Virgin Australia crew member in Fiji on New Year’s Day
Nadi: A man has been charged with the alleged rape of a Virgin Australia crew member in Fiji. This incident reportedly happened on New Year’s Day.
The police took him into custody on Wednesday, and he’s set to appear in court on Monday. Acting police commissioner Juki Fong Chew confirmed this in an email.
The crew members were celebrating New Year’s Eve in Nadi, a popular spot for tourists. After hitting up a nightclub, the alleged assault and a robbery took place.
Fiji’s deputy prime minister, Viliame R Gavoka, expressed regret over the incidents. He said their thoughts are with the victims and their well-being.
Gavoka mentioned that a suspect known to the police had already been questioned about the sexual assault. Locals are feeling pretty awful for the victims, according to Hosanna Kabakoro, who runs a foundation in Fiji.
Tourism is a big deal for Fiji, making up about 40% of the country’s economy. So, there’s a lot of concern about how this will affect their reputation.
Virgin Australia has sent support staff to Fiji since reports came out about the crew members being attacked while out clubbing. They were supposed to head back home by the end of the week.
