A man was pushed onto subway tracks in Manhattan but survived with injuries, raising concerns about subway safety in New York City.
New York City: On Tuesday afternoon, a man waiting for the subway in Manhattan was suddenly pushed onto the tracks right in front of an oncoming train. Thankfully, he survived but did sustain injuries to his leg and head, as reported by the NYPD.
This shocking incident happened just weeks after another violent act in the subway, where a woman tragically lost her life after being set on fire. It’s been a tough time for the city.
The whole thing was caught on video. A guy approached another man from behind and shoved him onto the tracks just as a train was coming in. It all went down at the 18th Street station in Chelsea around 1:35 PM.
Police have taken one man into custody as a person of interest, but no charges have been filed yet. The victim, who is 45 years old, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital and is in critical but stable condition.
To help with the rescue, the power on the southbound line was turned off for about an hour. Thankfully, service was back to normal by 4 PM.
Earlier this month, the woman who was set on fire was identified as 57-year-old Debrina Kawam from New Jersey. The suspect in that case has been charged with first-degree murder.
While subway safety is generally on par with the city’s overall safety, incidents like these raise alarms. This year, over a billion riders have used the subway, but there’s been a slight uptick in serious crimes, including a rise in killings.
In March, another person was killed after being pushed in front of a train in East Harlem. It’s a reminder that while the subway is a vital part of city life, safety concerns are very real.
