Phil Hayward shares his heart-wrenching journey caring for his grandad with Alzheimer’s
Prenton: Phil Hayward is on a mission to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s, inspired by his grandad, Roy Taylor. For nine years, Roy has been battling this cruel disease, and it’s been tough to watch.
Phil, 35, recalls how his grandad was once full of life, always busy with family and hobbies like golf. But since his diagnosis in 2016, Roy has become a shadow of his former self, often silent and distant.
Phil shared how heartbreaking it is to see the man he looked up to become so withdrawn. He feels like he’s taken on a caregiver role, especially since his grandad’s full-time carer is his 94-year-old nan, who refuses outside help.
Last Christmas was particularly hard for Phil when Roy spent the day in bed, away from the family. This moment pushed Phil to take action, leading him to run 3,650 kilometers barefoot to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Society.
He’s determined to make a difference, running 10K every day for a year to honor each year his grandad has suffered. Despite the challenges, including running in the snow, Phil is committed to this personal journey.
He hopes to raise awareness and contribute to finding a cure for Alzheimer’s, driven by love for his best friend and grandad. You can support Phil’s cause through his fundraiser.
